Vu Hoang

PhD Student, Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University

Hi there! I'm Vu Hoang, a third-year Ph.D. student in Information Systems at Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University, with an expected graduation in Summer 2029.

My research lies at the intersection of human–AI interaction, artificial social intelligence, and online education. I study how AI systems can better understand human needs, provide effective support, and collaborate with people in learning and decision-making contexts. My long-term goal is to develop socially intelligent AI agents that improve human outcomes while preserving human agency and trust. Feel free to explore my publications and research projects, and reach out at vuhoang at cmu dot edu.

Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, I completed dual Bachelor's degrees in Finance and Business Administration at the Australian National University, where I was awarded the International Undergraduate Scholarship. I then earned a Master's degree in Business Analytics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I worked with Prof. Yuanyang Liu and Prof. Missie Bowers. Before starting my Ph.D., I spent four years working in industry as a Data Analyst and Analytics Engineer, applying data science and machine learning techniques to large-scale business problems. During this time, I also spent two years working with Prof. Le Duy Dung on recommendation systems. Earlier in my academic journey, I was an A*STAR Scholar (2011–2014), with my high school education supported by Singapore's Ministry of Education.
